A Surprise for Ronan

After receiving the room boxes from Vernon & Jeff’s workshop (thank you both! And yes, this is a very shameful PSA on my end. But this is my blog, and I can do what I damn well want!), I began the fun and messy process of digging through my current inventory of mini goodness.

The “Bin” (as BK dryly calls it) is really our apartment’s coat closet. The original agreement was that I got to use the shelf above where we hang our coats and seasonal clothes. But when I began to include kits to the collection, BK grudgingly agreed to let me use the closet floor to store the boxes — so long as they’re on my side. Which is fine, since I don’t have a crazy amount of long coats in my wardrobe *cough, BK does, cough*

After pulling out what I needed,  I dumped them into boxes in my dining room/workroom and started working on the room boxes.

Sorry that I didn’t take pictures during the process — most of the time, if I wasn’t sanding the boxes, I either cutting paper or wood pieces, or rushing to the kitchen to wash the glue . By the time I was done, I realized that

a) I was basically building a house, rather than  three separate rooms.

b) the more I built, the more I realized it was really aimed for one of my dolls…

To be honest, I’m still stumped how Part B came about. I really wasn’t aiming to have all the boxes occupied by one single doll. Maybe my mind thought I didn’t resolve the issue I had the Winston built.

Since I believed my dolls have a mind of their own (sometimes), I took out Ronan and set him in one the boxes. Oddly enough, he looked comfy in it. Guess this new house is his.

So figured that’s a surprise enough for my Widower doll. Didn’t realize that the following day, I’d get a package from a distand friend of mine …containing another doll and a note.

The following is what she wrote (thanks Phim!):

“…you keep saying no one follows your blog. This is to prove that you got someone following it – LOL!

Think it’s cute you gave so many personalities [sic] for your dolls, but I felt so sad that you had one who is a widower. D, that’s not right at all! He’s too handsome to be alone!

You’re wondering about the doll right? Well, I saw her in a gift shop near my apartment. Her red hair caught my eye and it reminded me how one of your entries mentioned your widower having a daughter with red hair. Thought “why not”? Besides, I forgot your birthday yet again this year. LOL.

So, enjoy — and let me know how the intros turn out! If it’s a match, then you can’t him a widower anymore!”

Well, Phim, think the photo above clearly showed how successful the intros are. And yes, Ronan is officially not a widower anymore. Let alone homeless.

A Loophole? Why Yes Please!

Encouraged by the last build, decided to tackle on another mini project in between things going on in RL (you know, work, bills, finding a damn wedding minister, etc).  But in order to not make myself (anymore) crazy, I had to agree with the following rules  BK imposed.

1) Between now and the wedding, I am only allowed to have 4 kits in the apartment due to space constraints.

2) I can purchase more minis, only if I use up what I currently have (this provision, folks, sucks dirty ass).

3) In regards to Item 1 — I must choose my kits carefully because the ones that I pick are the ones that I am allowed to keep.

Dunno about you folks, but Items 1 & 3 are the toughest.  It doesn’t help that there are so many kits out there that I’d LOVE to have and build. An equally sucky factor on top of that is that for all the miniaturists and dollhouse fans out there, October is National Dollhouse and Miniature Month. Yes, folks, this does exists, and this doesn’t help all of us who are now barraged with emails from online mini vendors about sales and what not.  I’m telling you all, this is evil, evil, evil!!!

But rather than go to a corner and cry myself to a stupor, decided that like all rules, some are made to be bent. Just a little bit. Besides, BK knows better than to not interfere with a girl and her obsession. Especially since he was crazy enough to want to marry one.

Then it hit me — he only said I could keep 4 kits. But he never specified about limiting room boxes. They’re not really houses, and they usually come already assembled. So maybe — MAYBE — that might be my loophole.

Suffice to say, I went on a mad quest to look for room  boxes that weren’t so expensive. Almost passed out at how much vendors online were selling them. If it wasn’t the price of the boxes that sucked, it was shipping it that was worst. 😦

Luckily I found a seller on eBay that was selling handmade room boxes. I won one room box, and out of curiousity, checked to see if this same person was selling them on Etsy. Was pretty stoked to find out that he did — and promptly ordered two more.

At the moment, Jeff & Vernon (the two very talented gentlemen who make these boxes) are selling two kinds — one is a standard box that they installed legs, a sliding plexiglass door (to keep the dust out), and two window openings. The other one is a bit different in that it does have the legs, but instead, has a roof installed on top. The size of both are pretty good — it’s definitely big enough to be a cozy room for my dolls.  Plus, the prices and shipping rate are super reasonable — always a big plus for me. Granted, it takes a bit of time since they make the items to order. Again, that’s not a problem for me — bottom line, I’m more than happy to support artisans by buying directly from them whenever possible.

So I ordered the boxes, and after accosting the UPS driver (he’s probably wondering why he’s delivering packages to the apartment almost every day), the three arrived. Vernon & Jeff, if you both are reading this — you both scored a customer from me. Looking forward to start working on this!

…and hopefully BK won’t kill me after he sees the mess I’ve made in the dining room….

Guess There’s a First in Everything

Considering it’s been awhile since I built a dollhouse and completed it (the last one being the Rye, which was sold), still scratching my head in terms of what prompted me to go back. Granted, I got a wedding to prepare and things happening in real life (RL). But for some reason, when I saw this kit on eBay…I just had to have it.

The Roombox House

Maybe it was the memories of building a similar house (which I ended up selling)? Or that I needed an escape from the wedding plans? BK thinks it’s something much more simple than that — that subconsciously, I was missing my obsession. Apparently alot.

Without much ado, I am proud to present to you folks….my first build that for the first time in 2010 — I AM ACTUALLY KEEPING.

In terms of which of my dolls will be living here, some of my friends thought Ronan would be the one since the last time I built this same house, he was the occupant. But part of me felt that he needed someplace bigger, so I assigned it to a soon to be arriving addition to my dolls. Stay tuned!
